Everyone in Tennessee has been very excited this past year with all of the marijuana bills that were introduced. As the year went by, hope seemed to diminish little by little. But make no mistake, lawmakers are still trying to push for Tennessee’s medical marijuana program!
Here at Tennessee Marijuana Card, we are here to provide you with up to date medical marijuana news every step of the way!
House Bill 0490 is Tennessee’s recent bill that would allow patients with nine qualifying medical conditions to legally possess marijuana oil that consists of 0.9% THC oil or less. Right now, it is legal for those only diagnosed with epilepsy to possess marijuana oil that has less than 0.3% THC in the state.
The qualifying conditions that would be on the list are:
Alzheimer’s
ALS
End-stage cancer
Epilepsy
Crohn’s disease
Multiple sclerosis
Parkinson’s
HIV/AIDS
Sickle cell disease
While this is a step in the right direction, it is literally the teeniest tiniest baby step ever. The issue with this bill is that it is simply not enough. The bill acknowledges that marijuana has medicinal properties and can aid those with medical conditions yet it requires them to travel to another state to purchase their medication.
Keep in mind that these are Tennessee residents with debilitating medical conditions. Someone suffering from end-stage cancer should not be expected to travel out of state to get their medication; and if they do want to bring it back home with them, then it has to have a tiny amount of THC which may not even aid their condition at all.
THC levels of 0.3% that exist now for epilepsy patients is extremely low. So low that hemp oil, that is fully legal in the U.S., has 0.3% or less THC. Raising this limit to 0.9% is definitely better than 0.3% but is still not everything Tennesseans were hoping for.
In order to obtain medical marijuana with 0.9% THC, patients would have to have a letter from a doctor, which would only be valid for six months at a time, recommending medical marijuana for their medical condition.
If this bill passes, we will be here to help you with this step!
